Reflective Orchard Ground Cover
What Is Reflective Orchard Ground Cover?
Reflective orchard ground cover is a specialised reflective film temporarily installed along the orchard floor between tree rows during the final weeks before harvest.
The film reflects natural sunlight back into the lower and inner parts of the tree canopy, helping improve light distribution where fruit may otherwise receive less sunlight.
It is widely used by commercial fruit growers in leading fruit-producing countries as part of modern orchard management practices.
How Reflective Orchard Ground Cover Works
Natural sunlight reaches the reflective film on the orchard floor.
The film reflects a portion of that sunlight upward into the tree canopy, allowing light to reach areas that may otherwise remain shaded.
Improved light distribution throughout the canopy may support more uniform fruit development and colour, depending on the crop, cultivar, orchard design, weather conditions and overall orchard management.
How it works
Reflective orchard ground cover works by redirecting natural sunlight into areas of the tree canopy that receive less direct light.
Step 1 – Sunlight Reaches the Orchard
Sunlight naturally shines onto the tree canopy and the orchard floor. While the upper leaves receive direct sunlight, the lower and inner parts of the canopy often remain shaded.
Step 2 – The Reflective Film Captures the Light
The reflective film is installed on the ground between the tree rows, where it captures sunlight that would otherwise be absorbed by the soil or grass.
Step 3 – Light Is Reflected Back Into the Canopy
The reflective surface redirects sunlight upward into the lower and inner sections of the tree canopy, increasing light exposure throughout the tree.
Step 4 – Improved Light Distribution
By improving the distribution of natural sunlight within the canopy, reflective orchard ground cover may contribute to:
More even fruit colour development
More uniform fruit ripening
Improved light exposure throughout the tree canopy
Better visibility during harvesting

What Reflective Film Does — and Does Not Do
Typically installed during the final few weeks before harvest.
Different crops use different timings.
The ideal installation period depends on the crop, cultivar, local climate and the grower's orchard management programme.
Once harvesting is complete, the reflective film is removed, cleaned where appropriate, and stored or disposed of according to the product specification.

No. Reflective orchard ground cover is generally used during the pre-harvest period and removed once harvesting has been completed.
Reuse depends on the product specification and how it has been handled during use. Please refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations for your selected product.
No. Fruit colour development is influenced by many factors, including cultivar, weather conditions, orchard design, canopy management and overall crop management. Reflective ground cover is one management tool that may contribute to improved light distribution within the canopy.
Reflective orchard ground cover is primarily used to improve light distribution within the tree canopy. Any effect on yield or fruit quality will depend on numerous factors and may vary between orchards and growing seasons.
South Africa shares similar fruit-growing climates with countries such as Chile, Australia, Spain, Italy and parts of the United States, where reflective orchard ground cover has been incorporated into commercial orchard management programmes. Suitability should be assessed according to each orchard’s specific conditions.
The environmental characteristics depend on the product selected. AgriSun Solutions can provide product-specific information regarding material composition and disposal recommendations.
The film is laid between the tree rows and secured using suitable anchoring methods recommended for the orchard and local conditions.
Normal orchard operations should be planned around the installation period. Care should be taken to avoid damaging the reflective film during equipment movement.
The film should be installed correctly and secured according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Performance during adverse weather conditions will depend on the product specification and installation method.
